Overnight Outdoor Learning

Sierra Nevada Journeys Outdoor school

Overnight Outdoor Learning is an outstanding outdoor school program that is taught by our experiential educators. The three-to-five day programs are held at our Outdoor Education Camp in Portola, CA which is located 50 minutes north of Reno and 2.5 hours northeast of Sacramento. All lessons build critical thinking and collaboration skills and include pre- and post- assessments to ensure the highest level of effectiveness and impact.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR CLASSROOM'S outdoor school EXPERIENCE

Sierra Nevada Journeys works with each teacher to develop a customized set of lessons and activities from our standards correlated curriculum. Some of these lessons include engineering, pond ecology, ropes course, forest ecology, astronomy, geology, storytelling and night hikes. A lot of what we teach at outdoor school is as much about Social Emotional Learning as it is about science. They’ll learn about trusting each other, building confidence, and creating teamwork which occurs at each phase of the lessons and challenges.

Key benefits of Overnight Outdoor Learning:

  • We teach social-emotional learning (SEL) hand-in-hand with our science lessons.

  • Students will learn about trusting each other, building confidence, and creating teamwork which occurs at each phase of the lessons and challenges during the two-to-three-day experience.

  • Clean, modern facilities situated on 515 acres of pristine yellow pine forest.

  • Passionate educators with a variety of backgrounds who are First Aid and CPR certified.

  • Sierra Nevada Journeys is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA).
