The Sierra Nevada Journeys Model

Whole Schools

Sierra Nevada Journeys "Whole Schools" embody our core educational principle of providing students with multiple opportunities for engagement with science and outdoor science education. We believe the benefits of our programs to students, teachers and schools will multiply by connecting our program areas vertically across grade levels. We seek schools interested in signing up multiple grades for our Classrooms Unleashed or Overnight Outdoor Learning programs.

Five PILLARS OF OUR EDUCATION PROGRAMS

  1. Science
Science provides an exciting and effective lens for people to learn about the world around them, to ultimately participate as educated citizens and decision makers in our global society.

  2. Critical Thinking

Leaders of the future will need creativity and divergent thinking to succeed in a society driven by rapid technological advancement and global environmental change. Instead of being driven by vocabulary and memorization of facts, education must be based on learning how to think and reason.

  3. Outdoor Stewardship

People spend less time in nature than in any other time in history. At a time when global environmental issues demand our attention, direct experience in nature is critical to inspiring a connection with the natural world and accountability to its stewardship and conservation.

  4. Social Emotional Learning

Central to a successful learning experience is the opportunity to discover more about oneself by working with others. Scientists, problem solvers and environmental stewards do not work in isolation — great change happens through collaboration, mutual respect and effective communication.

  5. Cultural Relevancy

Support our increasingly diverse population of future scientists and environmental stewards. Express our mission by maintaining an inclusive curriculum that is relatable, relevant and representative of the students we serve.
