NEVADA RIVERS
SIXth THROUGH EIGHTH Grade Lessons
Sierra Nevada Journeys partnered with the Nevada Division of Water Resources to create lessons that promote awareness and understanding of six Nevada rivers, with a focus on flood safety measures. All lessons are aligned to Nevada Academic Content Standards, include a lesson plan and downloadable activity pages.
Carson River
During this 60-70 minute classroom lesson, students analyze images and texts from past events that occurred at the Carson River watershed. Explore why so many people settled in the Carson River Watershed area as well as the risks and causes of flooding. Then, students design solutions that reduce the risks of flooding.

humboldt river
During this 60-85 minute classroom lesson, students analyze images, texts and videos from past flooding events in the Humboldt River watershed. Students then write letters addressed to the Clark County Regional Flood Control District (CCRFCD) informing them of their findings and where they think further research is needed to improve the current dam infrastructure.
Muddy River
Students make observations on the area surrounding Muddy River and evaluate the effects of past flooding events. Then they will create solutions that mitigate problems created by flooding and propose them in letters addressed to the Clark County Regional Flood Control District (CCRFCD).

Truckee River
During this 60-minute classroom lesson, students learn about the causes of flooding events in the Truckee River watershed by creating watershed models and simulating different flooding events. They will analyze the causes and effects of historical floods. The students will return to their watershed models to design and test solutions that reduce the risk of flooding.

Virgin River
During this 60-minute classroom lesson, students learn about some solutions that have been attempted to solve problems created by flooding in the Virgin River watershed. They will also evaluate the impact these solutions have on the environment. Using their research, students will propose solutions to flooding that minimize the impacts on the environment.
Walker River
During this 60-minute classroom lesson, students learn about the cause of most of the flooding events in the Walker River watershed by creating watershed models and simulating different rain events. Then, they will analyze the causes and effects of historical floods. The students will return to their watershed models to design and test solutions that reduce the risk of flooding.
