April 17-19, Sierra Nevada Journeys partnered with DRI GreenPower, Nevada’s Northwestern Regional Professional Development Program, and The Catamount Fund, Ltd to bring Nevada’s educators a residential, 3-day training on Next Generation Science Standards at Grizzly Creek Ranch. The “NGSS Bootcamp” drew speakers from University of Nevada, Reno. The Nevada Department of Education and the Washoe County School District to help elementary school teachers and informal educators better understand Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Over the course of 16 hours of programming, 48 participants heard lectures from education experts, partook in hands-on activities, and had networking opportunities all geared towards implementing NGSS standards in elementary classrooms. According to pre- and post-evaluation data, participants’ comfort level working with NGSS increased by 20% over the course of the weekend. According to one teacher, “…’boot camp’ gave me a framework for understanding the Next Gen standards and practical strategies for implementation.”
Thanks to generous support from DRI GreenPower and The Catamount Fund, Ltd, every teacher was able to receive a full scholarship to come to the training weekend.
